A Namibian politician, previously known as Adolf Hitler Uunona, has opted to remove his controversial middle name in preparation for an upcoming local election. The 69-year-old district administrator explained that the decision was made to enhance his public perception.
Uunona, a member of the SWAPO party, is running for office in the Ompundja constituency in northern Namibia. He previously secured a significant victory in 2020, receiving 85% of the vote. Despite sharing a name with the infamous historical figure, Uunona is recognized as a staunch anti-apartheid advocate and a well-regarded individual within the community.
In response to international media scrutiny in 2020, Uunona clarified, “My father bestowed upon me the name Adolf Hitler, but it does not reflect my character resembling that of Adolf Hitler.”
Namibia, formerly German South West Africa, was colonized by Germany from 1884 to 1915. Consequently, German names and locations persist in various parts of the country.
