“Faulty Smart Meters Must Be Fixed Within 90 Days”

Energy suppliers are now required to fix faulty smart meters within 90 days under new regulations that will be enforced. Many households have faced issues with smart meters not functioning properly, leading to a lack of automatic meter readings being sent to suppliers. Failure to rectify these “dumb” smart meters within the specified timeframe could result in penalties or legal consequences from the regulator Ofgem.

These rules will take effect in early May, following recent changes that allow households to receive £40 in compensation if they encounter problems during smart meter installations. For instance, households can claim £40 if their smart meter appointment is delayed beyond six weeks.

Compensation will also be applicable if a scheduled installation fails due to the supplier’s fault or if no resolution plan is provided within five working days. Smart meters are utilized by nearly 40 million households and small businesses across the UK.

By 2033, energy suppliers must replace all smart meters still connected to 2G and 3G networks before these services are discontinued. Minister for Energy Consumers Martin McCluskey emphasized the importance of timely smart meter repairs to enhance standards, protect consumers, and ensure more individuals benefit from smart meters.

Victoria Bacon, Director of Communications at Smart Energy GB, highlighted the progress made in improving smart meter experiences, with a high percentage operating in smart mode and positive consumer satisfaction rates. The new regulations aim to enhance consumer confidence in smart meters, promote installations, and provide greater control over energy usage and cost-saving tariff options.
