Growing up in Detroit, she avidly watched “Road to Avonlea” with her grandmother, particularly admiring actress Mag Ruffman in her role as Aunt Olivia. Czajka’s childhood admiration led her to purchase a ticket to the event on P.E.I.
Fans from around the globe gathered for the sold-out convention celebrating the renowned Canadian series, which aired in over 100 countries from 1990 to 1996. The show, loosely based on Lucy Maud Montgomery’s novels, followed the story of Sarah Stanley, portrayed by future Academy Award winner Sarah Polley, as she navigated life with her late mother’s relatives in the early 20th century.
The three-day convention featured various activities, including oyster and wine tastings, panel discussions with the cast and crew, and tours of filming locations and significant sites related to Montgomery. Edward Lemon, assistant director of Fine Book Fairs, highlighted the enduring appeal of the show, noting its themes of kindness, friendship, and escape resonating with audiences even after three decades.
Mag Ruffman, who played Aunt Olivia, expressed appreciation for the fans’ enthusiasm and emotional connection to the show. She shared her ongoing curiosity about her character’s hypothetical current activities, reflecting on the lasting impact of portraying Olivia. Czajka, now introducing the series to her own children, emphasized the rarity of finding a show that transcends generations and provides wholesome entertainment for the whole family.
