Canadian swimming sensation Summer McIntosh has set her sights on clinching five individual gold medals at the upcoming Los Angeles Olympics in two years. Her preparations for this ambitious goal have been ongoing for the past year, with the Pan Pacific swimming championships, held in the same city as the 2028 Olympics, serving as a crucial benchmark of her progress.
As McIntosh, who is on the cusp of turning 20 next week, arrived for the championships starting on Wednesday, she expressed her excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Games. Reflecting on her flight into California, she shared how seeing the stadium gave her chills, igniting her imagination about the feats she hopes to achieve there. Every day, McIntosh envisions her performance in L.A., making her current presence in the state particularly meaningful.
Having secured three gold medals at the Paris Olympics, McIntosh has ascended to superstardom in the realm of swimming. She currently holds four individual long-course world records in the 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 400m freestyle, and 400m individual medley. Notably, her recent record-breaking swim in the 200m butterfly at the Canadian trials in Montreal marked a significant milestone, as she surpassed a longstanding women’s world record established in 2009.
Following her record-breaking achievement, McIntosh faced a setback due to illness, necessitating her withdrawal from the trials. After focusing on her recovery in the past weeks, she is now fully fit and ready to compete at the Pan Pacific championships. McIntosh is part of the 42-member Canadian team participating in the event at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center in Irvine, California.
Under the guidance of renowned U.S. coach Bob Bowman, whom she joined forces with in September last year, McIntosh is making her debut at the Pan Pacs championships. The 2022 edition of the event was canceled due to challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, making this year’s competition highly anticipated.
McIntosh’s event lineup at the championships includes the 200m freestyle, where she aims to gain valuable racing experience against top competitors. Notably, this marks her return to the 200m freestyle event on the international stage since the 2023 world championships. Despite uncertainties about her performance, McIntosh remains open to the possibility of achieving exceptional results, including a potential world record.
With both McIntosh and coach Bowman targeting peak performance at the Pan Pacs, the stage is set for McIntosh to showcase her prowess in the pool once again. As she looks forward to the upcoming challenges, McIntosh is optimistic about the opportunities for success and growth that lie ahead on her journey to the Los Angeles Olympics.
