Scherzer, at 42 years old, recorded his 3,516th career strikeout, surpassing Johnson by one. Among active pitchers, he now ranks second in strikeouts behind Justin Verlander, who has 3,554 strikeouts.
During the game, Scherzer struck out Kyle Schwarber in the sixth inning to surpass Johnson’s record. However, his night ended after giving up back-to-back home runs to Trea Turner and Bryce Harper, tying the game at 2.
Scherzer had a strong performance, pitching five scoreless innings and allowing only three hits before the consecutive home runs. He finished the game with four strikeouts, conceding two runs on five hits and lowering his ERA to 7.25.
A former first-round draft pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006, Scherzer has an impressive career resume, including three Cy Young Awards, eight All-Star selections, and two World Series championships.
In another development, Blue Jays’ George Springer was a late scratch from the starting lineup against the Phillies due to left shoulder tightness.
