Athletes are showcasing their talents at the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games in Corner Brook this week, backed by a dedicated team of more than 300 volunteers in orange shirts ensuring the smooth running of the event.
The transition day on Wednesday marked the arrival of the next group of athletes in the city, with sports activities set to resume in the evening. Duane Huxter was occupied at the Corner Brook Civic Centre, where he has been diligently organizing merchandise for over a week, mainly folding t-shirts.
Volunteers play various vital roles during the Games, from collaborating with local authorities to coordinate logistics to overseeing venue operations to guarantee a seamless experience for the athletes. Dave Campbell, the games director at SportNL and a member of the Games host committee, emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving success.
Campbell highlighted the significant contribution of volunteers, stating that the events heavily rely on their dedication. The volunteer-driven nature of such events was commended, particularly noting the strong support from communities like Corner Brook and Stephenville.
Coordinating attire for ten teams is a substantial task, but Huxter emphasized the impact it has on creating lasting memories for the athletes. Despite playing a more minor role during events like the opening ceremonies, he finds fulfillment in assisting athletes in showcasing their best performances.
Huxter expressed satisfaction in witnessing athletes proudly displaying their team colors during the ceremonies, knowing that he had personally handled most of the shirts. He underscored the importance of leaving a positive impression on the athletes and contributing in a meaningful way to their overall experience.
