After the largest union in the Yukon was placed under trusteeship, a virtual town hall was hosted by the parent union’s representatives to clarify the situation for members. Josée-Anne Spirito and Chris Aylward, the newly appointed trustee and administrator, both belong to the Public Service Alliance of Canada, the parent organization of the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU).
The Public Service Alliance took control of the YEU leadership, suspending the union’s bylaws and removing the president, vice-president, and directors from their positions. Spirito emphasized that the decision for trusteeship was not taken lightly and was not due to any individual’s actions or financial concerns within the union.
Aylward, whose salary is funded by YEU and role by PSAC, shared his experiences during the transition period. He mentioned facing obstacles and resistance from executive members, leading to a standstill in progress and the recommendation for trusteeship.
Despite some members expressing dissatisfaction with the decision, Spirito highlighted the need for representation at the upcoming convention, which is facing delegate shortages and vacant seats. She assured members that ongoing town halls will provide opportunities to address concerns and understand the corrective actions being implemented.
Spirito emphasized the importance of continuing negotiations for YEU members and reassured that the trusteeship will not hinder the bargaining process. Bargaining efforts remain a top priority for both YEU and PSAC during this transitional phase.
