The recent agreement made by the Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) government to cover Islanders’ MRI scans at a private clinic in Summerside is anticipated to cost up to $720,000. Health P.E.I. provided this figure in a statement to CBC News. This initiative aims to reduce the need for individuals requiring magnetic resonance imaging to travel to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.
Health P.E.I. also noted that a previous agreement for MRI scans at a private clinic in Moncton concluded on March 31, costing the province $3.8 million and offering 2,600 MRI appointments for Island patients. Although there is no current contract with the Moncton facility, Health P.E.I. assured that the health needs of Islanders are continuously evaluated, and additional capacity will be added as required to maintain service levels.
MRI scans are essential for identifying tumors and diagnosing internal issues in areas such as the liver or brain. The Summerside clinic is expected to conduct the first publicly funded scans starting this month.
The partnership between Health P.E.I. and the province aims to reduce wait times for scans. Data on the province’s website indicate wait times of up to 107 days for semi-urgent MRIs and 730 days for non-urgent scans, with urgent scans having a wait time of up to 23 days. The target wait times are set at 28 days for semi-urgent, 84 days for non-urgent, and 14 days for urgent scans.
While the agreement has been praised as a means to address lengthy wait times, Opposition MLA Gord McNeilly expressed concerns, labeling the partnership as “private creep.” He advocated for investing in improving access within the public health-care system rather than relying on private clinics. McNeilly emphasized the need for increased investment in MRI scanners to enhance healthcare services in the region.
