“Women’s Shelter Condemns Energy Minister’s Misogynistic Lyrics”

A women’s shelter in Halifax has raised concerns about a song featuring “violent” and misogynistic lyrics performed by Energy Minister Marco MacLeod over a decade ago. The shelter, Adsum House, expressed disgust at the content of the song titled “George Jones,” which includes derogatory terms such as “sluts,” “hoes,” and “bitches.”

Adsum House criticized MacLeod for his involvement in the song, emphasizing that he was not a young adult at the time of its recording. The shelter claimed that MacLeod was in his 20s when the songs were made and in his thirties when they were released on streaming platforms, although his exact age during the recording remains uncertain.

The controversy surrounding MacLeod’s past songs has sparked a debate on whether such behavior is acceptable for a public official. Adsum House condemned the lyrics as perpetuating violence against women and rejected any excuses based on age or cultural context.

MacLeod, who was elected in a 2024 byelection and re-elected later that year, responded to the backlash by acknowledging the inappropriateness of the song’s lyrics. He described the song as a product of a different time and stated that he would not produce similar content today.

In light of the situation, Adsum House highlighted the importance of addressing issues of gender-based violence, referencing findings from the Mass Casualty Commission. The shelter called for accountability from MacLeod for promoting harmful beliefs through his music.

The Premier’s office was contacted for a response to Adsum House’s statement, but inquiries were redirected to the caucus office. MacLeod issued a public apology for the offensive lyrics and expressed his commitment to combatting misogyny in all its forms.

The controversy surrounding MacLeod’s past songs has generated discussions about accountability, respect for women, and the role of public figures in promoting positive societal values.
