Quebec’s autonomous police oversight body is conducting an investigation following an incident that led to shots being fired and a fatality during a police pursuit involving three distinct law enforcement agencies near Lévis overnight. The authorities responded to a call around 11:30 p.m. on Friday regarding a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on Highway 20 towards the Pierre-Laporte Bridge, which initiated a police chase.
Lévis police, in collaboration with the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), were involved in managing the situation. The suspect’s vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle heading south, resulting in shots being fired and causing injuries to one individual from two bullets. Subsequently, the suspect fled in a stolen vehicle post-collision and was apprehended later at Lallemand Road and Guillaume-Couture Boulevard in Lévis.
As of 5 a.m. on Saturday, a security perimeter was still established, with the SQ’s tactical intervention team on-site. The BEI, in an email to Radio-Canada, disclosed its investigation into the incident involving the SQ, Quebec City police, and Lévis police. The BEI mentioned that the individual shot is in a stable condition, and confirmed one fatality, withholding further specifics. Seven BEI investigators have been assigned to delve into the circumstances surrounding the intervention.
Moreover, Montreal police are conducting a separate inquiry into the events leading up to the police action. The BEI is seeking to interview witnesses and encourages them to reach out via its website for any relevant information.
