Northwestern Ontario is currently facing 85 active wildfires, as reported by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES) on Saturday night. Out of these, seven wildfires are not under control, while six are being held, and nine are under control, with the rest being closely observed.
The latest update from the province revealed that no new fires had been confirmed in the region since the previous update on Friday. The situation is expected to improve due to cooler temperatures and forecasted precipitation, which will aid in reducing the intensity of the significant fires in the area.
The forest fire hazard in northwestern Ontario is mostly low, except for some pockets of moderate hazard in specific areas such as Kenora, Marten Falls First Nation, and Thunder Bay fire management district.
Fires of Interest in the Region
- The Rinker Complex: Comprising Thunder Bay 36, Dryden 34, and Dryden 35, this remains a major firefighting operation. Thunder Bay 36 covers 301,240 hectares, Dryden 34 spans 45,800 hectares, and Dryden 35 is 30,201 hectares. These fires are still uncontrolled, with evacuation orders in place. Although fire activity is low, the recent weather shift with cooler temperatures and potential rain is expected to help contain the fires.
- Atikokan Cluster: Includes Fort Frances 13, 14, and 15, covering 25,313 hectares, 51,768 hectares, and 42,273 hectares, respectively. While Fort Frances 13 is observed, Fort Frances 14 and 15 remain uncontrolled. The weather conditions on Saturday, including cooler weather and higher humidity, were anticipated to assist in managing the fires, although stronger winds could pose challenges. Additional firefighting personnel from Mexico have joined efforts on Fort Frances 14.
Approximately 829 Individuals Displaced
As of the latest data, around 829 people are still displaced due to the wildfires in Ontario. About 2,000 evacuees from northwestern Ontario have been able to return home.
The ministry of Emergency Preparedness and Response has been actively coordinating with various stakeholders to manage the situation effectively.
Evacuation Orders and Alerts
Two new evacuation alerts are in effect for Fort Frances 39 and Minnesota’s “Thumb Fire.” The Dryden Fort Frances Atikokan District has issued these alerts due to the evolving wildfire situation.
Residents in the affected areas are strongly advised to prepare for possible evacuations on short notice. Evacuation orders/alerts remain effective for several areas impacted by the wildfires.
People under evacuation orders must leave the area, while those under evacuation alerts should be ready to evacuate when necessary.
The ministry is conducting assessment flights to document property damage and provide support to affected individuals.
Northwestern Ontario and parts of northeastern Ontario are currently designated as a restricted fire zone, prohibiting open-air burning activities.
Updates have been made to the implementation order for active fires in the Thunder Bay–Ignace District, with some areas being excluded.
Highway Closures and Safety Measures
Several highways have been closed due to wildfire activities, as indicated by the province’s interactive highway map. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) have issued safety guidelines, urging people to avoid affected areas, follow evacuation orders, and stay informed through official sources.
Canada Post Service Alerts
Mail delivery has been suspended in certain communities impacted by the wildfires.
New Fires in Northeast Region
Eight new fires were confirmed in the northeast region, with varying levels of control. The forest fire danger ratings in northeastern Ontario are predominantly low, with some areas showing moderate to high hazards.
Efforts Against Forest Fires
The ministry has allocated additional funds for firefighting resources and personnel, with a focus on enhancing response capabilities. After-action reviews will be conducted to improve future planning and responses. Support is being provided to affected communities, including equipment and supplies, and collaborations with various organizations to aid in firefighting efforts.
