“Kayla Alexander Leads Canada to Victory Over Senegal at FIBA Pre-Qualifying Tournament”

Kayla Alexander led Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team with 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in their 72-57 victory over Senegal at the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament in Guadalajara, Mexico. Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb contributed 13 points each for the Canadian team.

Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “It’s a positive start for us. Beginning with a win is always ideal. We displayed toughness and performed well on the boards, especially against Senegal, known for their strong rebounding. Securing this victory is a good accomplishment for us.”

Canada excelled on the offensive glass, holding a 15-8 advantage over Senegal. Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds significantly aided in gaining extra possessions for the team. Swords’ early contributions, including three three-pointers in the first quarter, helped Canada establish an early lead, which they maintained throughout the game despite Senegal’s comeback attempt in the third quarter.

The Canadian team dominated the paint with a 26-14 points advantage, shooting 52.5% from that area. Both teams scored 11 points off turnovers, while Senegal narrowly outscored Canada’s bench with a 31-29 margin.

Following their victory, Canada will have a day of rest on Tuesday before facing the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
