U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that a controversial oil pipeline endeavor is being resurrected while Canada and the United States are in ongoing discussions to prevent new U.S. tariffs on Canadian products. Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that the Keystone XL Pipeline, previously halted by President Joe Biden, might be revived. He also shared a computer-generated image depicting him lifting a large pipeline labeled “KEYSTONE” from a grave, with American flags in the background and a headstone reading “Buried by Biden.”
Canada has not officially responded to Trump’s assertion regarding the project’s revival within the context of trade negotiations. Washington announced a temporary halt to the planned 50% tariffs on various Canadian commodities for three days to facilitate further talks.
The history of the Keystone XL expansion dates back to its initial proposal in July 2008 when it was introduced during Stephen Harper’s tenure as Canadian prime minister and George W. Bush’s final term as U.S. president. The project aimed to extend the existing Keystone pipeline to transport oilsands bitumen from Alberta to Texas.
Fast forward to August 2026, Trump has agreed to delay imposing new 50% tariffs on a variety of Canadian goods for three days, coinciding with his remarks about the potential revival of the Keystone XL project. However, Prime Minister Mark Carney has not made any mention of the Keystone XL project in his statement regarding the postponed U.S. tariffs.
