“Ottawa Parents Push for Safety Upgrades at Local School”

Concerned parents in Ottawa are advocating for increased safety measures at a local elementary school following an incident where a vehicle crashed through a fence into the schoolyard. Over 170 individuals have signed an online petition addressed to the Ontario Ministry of Education, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (OCDSB), and the City of Ottawa expressing worries about potential future accidents at Knoxdale Public School on Greenbank Road.

The petition, initiated by Rebecca Taggart, a parent with two children attending the school, emphasizes the urgent need for safety enhancements. Taggart highlighted the potential devastation such incidents could bring to families and schools, describing it as a nightmare scenario. The petition specifically calls for the installation of bollards along the sidewalk bordering the play yard and suggests temporarily relocating the play area to the rear of the school building until new safety measures are implemented.

The vehicle collision occurred on August 6, with the car coming to a stop in an area where younger students typically play during recess. According to Ottawa paramedics, the elderly driver may have experienced a medical emergency before the crash. Fortunately, no one else was harmed, as classes were not in session at the time.

Local politicians, including Knoxdale-Merivale Coun. Sean Devine and College ward Coun. Laine Johnson, have shown support for the petition. In response to the concerns raised, efforts are underway to find cost-effective solutions to enhance safety around the school premises. Proposed measures include improved signage and the extension of a nearby median to prevent unauthorized traffic movements.

While the OCDSB has confirmed that necessary repairs to the damaged fence will be completed before the new school year, ongoing discussions are taking place to address the broader safety concerns at Knoxdale Public School. The incident has reignited the importance of implementing preventative measures to safeguard school environments, following a tragic incident in Richmond Hill last year that prompted stricter regulations on vehicle parking near school facilities.
