Despite their contrasting personalities, they both represent Canada’s sole WNBA team.
Dez, hailing from Muskoka, is depicted as composed, a music enthusiast, a fan of soft-shell tacos, and a Taurus. Meanwhile, Dot, named after Toronto’s nickname T-Dot, is portrayed as energetic, enjoying cotton candy, watching the Netflix F1 documentary series “Drive to Survive,” and being a Gemini. Their unique bond formed when Dot followed the northern lights to Dez’s territory, realizing they complemented each other perfectly.
According to the Tempo’s news release, the mascots share a love for rhythm, albeit in different ways, with Dez contributing patience and timing, and Dot adding speed and fearless energy, ultimately leading them to Toronto. Despite their endearing backstory, some fans have criticized the mascots’ design and lack of appeal, comparing them unfavorably to the Raptor, the Toronto Raptors’ mascot.
Critics on social media have expressed mixed feelings about the mascots, with some finding their faces unsettling. While the Tempo’s chief marketing officer emphasized the mascots’ Canadian identity, some online voices believe they do not adequately represent Toronto, suggesting alternatives like a beaver or a raccoon would have been more fitting choices.
While some fans have shown support and appreciation for the mascots, others have raised questions about their relationship and speculated on their sexuality. However, a TSN reporter clarified that Dez and Dot are simply best friends and not related or romantically involved.
The Toronto Tempo, facing a challenging season with a 10–25 record and a 12-game losing streak, are now out of playoff contention following a recent defeat to the Washington Mystics. Despite the mixed reactions to their mascots, the team continues to push forward in their inaugural season.
