After operating for seven years, the founder of the Yorkville Murals festival has announced that this year will mark the final event. Alan Ganev, who initiated the festival in 2019 adjacent to his Yorkville gallery, expressed gratitude for the city’s past support but noted the absence of city grants for this year’s edition.
Ganev highlighted the significance of the free festival, which transforms Yorkville Avenue into an open-air gallery and drew over 70,000 visitors last year. Despite typically securing 60% of its funding from private investors, Ganev emphasized the vital role of grants for the festival’s sustainability, especially following the denial of funding despite the festival’s record-breaking success in the previous year.
The city offers two primary grants for festival organizers: The Cultural Festivals Funding Program and the Special Event Stabilization Initiative, both of which Yorkville Murals received grants from last year. However, citing a high volume of applications and limited availability of funds, the city explained the challenges in allocating grants to all applicants, including Yorkville Murals.
In response to the funding setback, Ganev acknowledged receiving the Experience Ontario grant from the provincial government, but underscored the essential need for support from the city to continue the festival’s operations. Moving forward, he expressed openness to discussions with the city or province to explore strategies for securing additional funding to sustain the festival in the future.
The upcoming weekend will host the final Yorkville Murals event, concluding the festival’s seven-year run.
