“Gary Southgate’s Eastend Scenic Rail Tours Revive History”

Gary Southgate’s dream of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours came to life last month with the inaugural public ride through the picturesque landscapes of southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley. A farmer from North Battleford, Sask., Southgate has spent years assembling a collection of old trains to narrate the tales of the “Valley of Hidden Secrets.”

Southgate’s fascination with trains dates back to his childhood, watching steam locomotives pass by in Biggar to North Battleford. His collection started with a 1929 Canadian Pacific Railway steam engine and later transitioned to acquiring CN equipment to recreate the ambiance of the historic Super Continental passenger trains.

Currently, Southgate’s collection of rail cars is extensive, with some destined for restoration and potential museum use. Notably, two of his cars appeared in the Polar Express movies, and he acquired the Cape Tormentime rail car, once used by Eleanor Roosevelt on a Canadian excursion.

Despite challenges, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Southgate persevered to launch Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, running successful trips with the assistance of Great Western Railway staff. With plans for further development, including an RV park and museum, Southgate envisions a thriving tourist attraction that celebrates history and scenic beauty.

The venture has garnered support from locals and visitors alike, with Southgate’s determination and passion driving the project forward. Looking ahead, he remains optimistic about the future of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, aiming to leave a lasting legacy that preserves history and captivates audiences from near and far.
