“Charlottetown Faces Prolonged Search for Police Chief”

Charlottetown, the capital of Prince Edward Island, is facing a prolonged search for a permanent police chief over a year after Brad MacConnell transitioned to the city’s chief administrative officer position. Despite two unsuccessful recruitment processes, both candidates who were offered the role eventually declined. MacConnell, with over three decades of experience in Charlottetown Police Services, emphasized the importance of a meticulous and thoughtful selection process for the next police chief, noting that only 15 individuals have held the position since Charlottetown’s incorporation in 1855.

The search for the 16th police chief is deemed critical by MacConnell, who highlighted the significant responsibilities associated with the role. The ideal candidate, according to him, should prioritize community engagement, possess a comprehensive understanding of police operations, and recognize the interconnectedness of police services with other city departments and government entities.

In the absence of a permanent chief, Charlottetown Police Services has been overseen by interim chiefs from within the force, a situation that MacConnell acknowledged presents challenges. However, he expressed gratitude for the continuity provided by longstanding police officers in these temporary roles, underscoring the importance of taking the necessary time to appoint the right individual for the permanent position.

Having transitioned from chief of police to chief administrative officer, MacConnell expressed contentment with his new role, emphasizing his enjoyment in serving the city in a different capacity. He described the transition as a learning experience, allowing him to gain a comprehensive understanding of city operations and finances while actively shaping decisions to enhance service delivery.

Amidst global uncertainties and urban growth, financial stewardship and service excellence remain key priorities for MacConnell. The city is also in the process of formulating a new four-year strategic plan, emphasizing public consultation and engagement with current and incoming council members.
