“Calgary Pride Faces Financial Strain, Urges Support”

Calgary Pride faces a significant financial challenge, with the possibility of this year being its last without increased funding. The Pride week starts on August 31 and ends on September 6, culminating in the annual parade. While organizers have secured funding for this year’s events, they have adjusted schedules to focus more on community-based programs.

With a call for $250,000 in donations, Calgary Pride emphasizes the importance of this cash injection to sustain future events. Andrea Scheelar, director-at-large, expressed concerns about the potential loss of an organization that has a longstanding presence in the community. The financial shortfall is attributed to heightened competition for grants and reduced support from corporate sponsors, echoing challenges faced by Pride organizations nationwide.

Last year, Calgary Pride experienced a setback in funding due to diminishing support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, a trend linked to shifts in corporate priorities following political changes. Despite efforts to streamline costs and explore cost-saving measures, the organization had to cancel its gala event and faces growing pressures amid rising event expenses.

In addition to financial concerns, Calgary Pride notes a rise in online hate towards the LGBTQ+ community, reflecting broader societal shifts in attitudes. Despite these challenges, organizers remain optimistic about receiving increased donations to sustain their operations and uphold the spirit of resilience within the community.
