Ontario Premier Doug Ford, along with Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli and Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, will address the public in Hamilton on Monday in response to the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade tensions. The news conference is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. ET, as confirmed by the premier’s office.
The announcement follows the breakdown of Canada-U.S. trade negotiations last week, where Prime Minister Mark Carney instructed his representatives to withdraw from the discussions after the Trump administration presented last-minute demands that Carney deemed unreasonable. Carney emphasized that the U.S. demands were excessive and inadequate.
The implementation of 50% tariffs on approximately $28 billion worth of Canadian products took effect early Saturday following the unsuccessful talks. Carney declared that retaliatory tariffs matching the U.S. tariffs will be imposed starting September 8.
Expressing his support for the prime minister’s decision, Ford stated his satisfaction with not signing the agreement, citing it as unfavorable. He emphasized the need to combat tariffs with equal measures.
Ford, alongside other provincial leaders, has endorsed Carney’s stance in rejecting the trade deal.
