Sabrina and Junior Hunt were surprised to witness a rare sight in Labrador West over the weekend. While boating to their cabin on Shabougamou Lake near Labrador City, they initially mistook a large pile of wood for something stationary. However, as they approached, they realized it was a muskox moving along the shoreline.
Captured on video by Junior Hunt, the muskox was seen leisurely strolling near the water as the couple observed from a distance of about 30 feet. Sabrina described the encounter as mesmerizing, noting the muskox’s fur swaying like a magical grass skirt.
Muskox are typically found in the Arctic tundra but have been sporadically sighted in Labrador over the years. The Hunts speculated that the muskox may have migrated from herds in northern Quebec. The Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands expressed surprise at the rare sighting and commended the couple for their photos and video evidence.
