Alberta’s police oversight agency is looking into a shooting involving Edmonton police that resulted in the death of a 57-year-old man in the western part of the city. According to a press release from the Edmonton police on Tuesday, they were called to respond to a report of weapons at 7:14 p.m. on Monday. The incident took place at a hotel near the intersection of Stony Plain Road and 178 Street, where it was reported that two men were present, with one of them possessing a firearm. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) confirmed that the event occurred at the Hilton Garden Inn on Stoney Plain Road.
Upon arrival, the police contained the area and tried to communicate with the individuals involved. Subsequently, a man emerged from the room multiple times before allegedly approaching officers with a pair of scissors. In response, two police officers discharged their firearms. Thankfully, no police or emergency personnel sustained injuries during the incident. Despite efforts to save the man’s life, he was pronounced dead at the scene. ASIRT has taken over the investigation into this tragic shooting.
