The meeting drew a large crowd with differing opinions. Many residents are against the proposed changes, expressing concerns about environmental impacts and the potential development of a mine. On the other hand, some view Gladiator’s plan as a positive economic opportunity for the city, dismissing the environmental concerns as exaggerated.
Supporters of the mining exploration, like former Whitehorse Copper Mine employee Randy Clarkson, emphasized the economic benefits and the importance of balancing environmental considerations with the need for resource development in a transitioning economy.
The key issue revolves around three green space tracts identified by Gladiator for potential exploration. If approved, these areas would need to be rezoned as future planning zones, requiring the city to establish a new policy. Residents like Christine Aikens worry about the broader implications beyond just the copper belt area.
Former mayor Laura Cabott urged council to uphold the existing community plan, emphasizing the plan’s recent adoption and cautioning against hasty changes. She also called for a comprehensive mineral framework and awaited new minerals legislation before making significant amendments.
Local resident Danièle Héon supported mining in the Yukon and criticized what she described as unwarranted opposition from certain residents. She noted the increasing division within the community over the issue.
