A recent report from WorkSafeBC, obtained through a freedom of information request, has disclosed that the operator of a Sandman Hotel in Williams Lake had been found in violation of asbestos regulations more than a dozen times across various locations in British Columbia. The report outlines a penalty of $624,051.48 imposed on Northland Properties by B.C.’s workplace regulator for failing to ensure the safety of workers during a renovation project at the Williams Lake hotel in December 2025.
During an inspection at the site, a WorkSafeBC inspector observed visible mold on the walls, the absence of decontamination measures, and only one worker wearing a disposable dust mask voluntarily. Despite prior knowledge from a pre-construction report that asbestos was present in drywall compound and lead paint in the hotel, the risks were not effectively communicated to employees, according to the report.
The report stated that due to these deficiencies, individuals entering the renovation area were likely exposed to asbestos and other hazardous materials. Cross-contamination within the hotel was also deemed probable, with contaminated debris potentially spreading to other areas via footwear and clothing.
Following the inspection, WorkSafeBC issued a stop-work order at the site, prompting the hotel operator to initiate asbestos abatement before resuming the renovation work. The regulator noted that Northland failed to demonstrate due diligence in ensuring asbestos safety and compliance with worker safety regulations.
An official highlighted that asbestos and lead are confirmed carcinogens, indicating that hotel workers and guests might have been exposed to asbestos fibers during the extensive renovation project. Northland has a history of multiple penalties, stop-work orders, and safety notices related to hazardous material exposure at various Sandman Hotel locations across British Columbia over the past decade.
The report emphasized that the significant penalty imposed on Northland was warranted due to the company’s repeated violations and lack of substantial action to prevent future worker exposure and violations. Northland Properties, a Vancouver-based hospitality firm, operates various brands including Sandman Hotels, Denny’s Canada, Grouse Mountain Resort, and Chop Steakhouse. The company’s CEO, Tom Gaglardi, also owns the NHL’s Dallas Stars.
Northland has indicated that no hotel guests were exposed to asbestos or hazardous materials, and they intend to appeal the WorkSafeBC penalty, affirming their commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of staff and guests in all their operations.
