David Breault, the chair of Capital Pride’s board of directors, expressed confidence in the smooth running of this year’s parade, although precautions are being taken in case of any unforeseen issues.
The cancellation of last year’s parade stemmed from a statement of solidarity with Palestine posted by Capital Pride in 2024, which sparked controversy and led to the withdrawal of support from various entities, including the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and Mayor Mark Sutcliffe. Queers for Palestine Ottawa advocated for the reinstatement of the statement, leading to tensions during the 2025 parade that eventually resulted in its cancellation.
Reflecting on the events, Capital Pride acknowledged the disappointment and challenges faced, attributing the cancellation to concerns about public safety and logistical constraints. Despite the setbacks, plans for this year’s parade are well underway, with a new route that includes a stop at the Thunderhead monument symbolizing the struggles of the LGBTQ+ community.
In light of recent security concerns at Pride events globally, the Ottawa Police Service has announced a significant presence to ensure the safety of participants during the upcoming parade. Capital Pride organizers recognize the complex history between the LGBTQ+ community and law enforcement, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety while fostering a welcoming environment for all attendees.
