A mysterious new landmass has been discovered floating in the Williston Reservoir in northern British Columbia, sparking curiosity among B.C. Hydro and local residents. The island, covered with trees, was first noticed by a boater and shared on social media, quickly gaining widespread attention.
Rocky Avery, who received the photos and videos of the floating island, described it as a remarkable sight unlike anything he had seen in his decades in the region. Concerned about the upcoming fishing derby and potential risks, Avery shared the images to raise awareness among the public and B.C. Hydro.
Initially met with skepticism, the discovery of the floating island was confirmed through satellite imagery, showing it located in the main body of the reservoir. Estimated to be around 70 meters wide and 140 meters long, equivalent to roughly two NFL football fields, the island captured the interest of many.
Despite disappearing from satellite data by August 5, B.C. Hydro assured that they are monitoring the situation closely, suggesting the island may have moved to a sheltered area along the shoreline. The presence of the island is believed to be a result of high water levels in the reservoir, possibly causing driftwood accumulation over the years.
