A fire that occurred on Monday evening outside the Plaza of Nations building in Vancouver is currently under investigation. Social media posts featuring images and videos of smoke at the site along False Creek’s seawall started circulating around 7:40 p.m. PT.
Ryan Cameron, an acting assistant fire chief at Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS), mentioned to CBC News at around 8:10 p.m. PT that firefighting crews promptly responded to the fire and managed to apply water to it. Fortunately, there were no individuals inside the building at the time of the incident.
Cameron stated that fire investigators are on the scene examining the cause of the fire, with crews actively searching the building. Five heavy apparatuses and an airline support unit were dispatched to tackle the fire. The blaze was highly visible in the vicinity due to the Plaza of Nations’ prime location along the seawall.
The Plaza of Nations, a key feature of Expo 86, a world’s fair that took place from May 2 to Oct. 13, 1986, holds historical significance in Vancouver’s landscape.
