Braeden Caley is set to become the new Member of Parliament representing North Vancouver-Capilano following a victory in a recent byelection, according to projections by the CBC decision desk. The byelection, held alongside two others in Ontario and Quebec, saw the Liberals emerge victorious in all three races.
Caley, a former staffer in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office, was among six contenders vying for the vacant seat. The position became available when Jonathan Wilkinson resigned to assume the role of Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. Wilkinson, who had held the seat since 2015 and won with a significant majority in the previous federal election, left the position in June.
The Conservative party last held the North Vancouver-Capilano riding in 2011 during Stephen Harper’s majority government. Other candidates in the byelection included Stephen Curran of the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale of the NDP, Shelley Luce of the Greens, Ehsan Arjmand of the People’s Party, and Independent candidate Jeff Monds.
With the recent wins, the Liberals have further solidified their majority in the House of Commons, anticipating six more byelections in the near future. The House is expected to reconvene for its fall session on September 21.
