Prepare for a chilly adventure as the beloved show, “North of North,” returns for its second season in Ice Cove.
The acclaimed comedy, a joint effort by APTN, CBC, and Netflix, follows Siaja (Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman navigating life post a highly publicized split from her husband. Season 1 was a worldwide sensation, ranking on Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and receiving acclaim for its blend of humor and poignant themes.
“We cherish comedy with depth. We enjoy laughter but also appreciate tears,” shared co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald with CBC News.
The series garnered significant recognition, securing nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer in a Comedy for Lambe.
Reflecting on the unexpected success, co-creator and executive producer Alethea Arnaquq-Baril expressed their astonishment at the show’s immense popularity.
Season 2 of “North of North” continues Siaja’s journey as she grapples with motherhood, a job, and dating while navigating complex relationships with her mother, Neevee (Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (Jay Ryan).
The storyline delves into Siaja’s pursuit of self-discovery and her efforts to reconcile conflicting emotions, encapsulating the Inuktitut concept of “pilimmaksarniq” – mastering skills through observation, practice, and perseverance.
Lambe noted the turmoil her character faces in the new season, describing Siaja’s state as “a very messy place” in her interactions with her mother.
As Neevee begins to open up and expand her store, tensions arise for Siaja as she navigates between honoring her mother’s wishes and seeking out her long-lost sister.
Filming in Iqaluit once again for Season 2, the creators emphasized the importance of Inuit representation in the production to maintain authenticity.
Expecting Season 2 to deliver unexpected twists and deeper character explorations, Arnaquq-Baril teased new faces and a more expansive narrative, promising a blend of humor and heart in line with the show’s essence.
With a star-studded cast returning and notable guest appearances, “North of North” Season 2 is set to premiere on APTN+ on September 1 in Canada before a wider release on CBC TV, CBC Gem, and APTN TV on September 8, followed by a global launch on Netflix.
