Disney Cruise Line is set to make a return to Prince Edward Island next year, marking its first visit in almost ten years and bringing around 4,000 passengers to Charlottetown in a single day during a period when the region’s tourism season typically slows down. The Disney Wish cruise ship is scheduled to dock in Charlottetown on October 27, 2027, as part of a seven-night Canada and New England voyage departing from New York City.
Port Charlottetown’s CEO, Mike Cochrane, expressed enthusiasm about Disney Cruise Line’s decision to return, highlighting the Island’s growing reputation in the global tourism market. Cochrane mentioned that discussions with Disney had been ongoing for several years, with Disney Cruise Line confirming their intent to revisit Charlottetown without hesitation.
The strategic alignment of Prince Edward Island’s offerings, including its hospitality, picturesque coastline, red sand beaches, and the iconic Anne of Green Gables attraction, with Disney’s brand values has been emphasized as a key reason for Disney’s interest in revisiting the region.
Notably, Disney Cruise Line views this return as part of a broader initiative to provide guests with diverse experiences in exploring Canada. Jose Fernandez, the company’s vice-president of port strategy, development, and operations, highlighted the introduction of the Disney Wish in New York City as a significant development for the cruise line, emphasizing the opportunity to showcase Canada’s Atlantic coast to guests and immerse them in the region’s culture and beauty.
Cochrane underscored the importance of the visit’s timing for local tourism businesses, as it occurs when many establishments would typically be winding down for the season. Describing it as a form of “managed tourism,” Cochrane noted that businesses have a year to prepare for the influx of visitors and capitalize on the economic opportunities it presents.
Despite potential weather challenges in late October, including cooler temperatures and the possibility of snow, Cochrane highlighted the appeal of such conditions for some visitors seeking a unique experience. Looking ahead, he mentioned that future Disney visits would be contingent on the company’s scheduling and access to key ports like New York.
In April, Cochrane had previously announced that 79 ships were expected to visit Charlottetown during the season, projecting an estimated 160,000 passengers to pass through the port.
