Kroenke Sports to Acquire Controlling Stake in LA Angels

Kroenke Sports and Entertainment has agreed to acquire a controlling stake in the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, further expanding its portfolio of sports teams in the United States. The deal, announced by Stan Kroenke’s company, is expected to be finalized in early 2027 pending approval from Major League Baseball.

The acquisition adds the Angels to Kroenke’s already impressive lineup of sports franchises, which includes the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, Premier League powerhouse Arsenal, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids, and SoFi Stadium, among others. The move marks the conglomerate’s entry into the realm of baseball, taking over from Moreno, who has overseen the Angels for the past 23 years.

Expressing excitement about the future of the Angels, Kroenke emphasized the team’s rich history and strong market presence. Moreno, who purchased the Angels from Walt Disney Company in 2003, saw initial success with the team winning several AL West titles. However, the Angels have faced a decline in performance, currently on track for their 11th consecutive losing season and 12th consecutive season without making the playoffs.

In contrast, Kroenke’s existing teams have enjoyed success in recent years, with championships in various leagues and continued competitiveness. The Angels’ struggles during Moreno’s tenure have been attributed to his management style and decisions, including high-profile acquisitions that failed to deliver expected results. Criticisms also extend to infrastructure and off-field issues within the organization.

Moreno’s decision to explore selling the Angels in 2022, later retracting the offer in 2023, signaled a potential shift in ownership. Recent changes, including the appointment of John Mozeliak to lead baseball operations, reflect efforts to revitalize the team under Kroenke’s ownership. The move marks a significant change for the Angels, who have had limited success in recent years despite their loyal fan base.

As Kroenke Sports and Entertainment prepares to take over the Angels, it will become only the fourth permanent owner of the franchise since its founding in 1961. The acquisition represents a new chapter for the Angels, following a period of uncertainty and underperformance under Moreno’s leadership.
