Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz mentioned on Wednesday that Israel is awaiting approval from the United States to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. This plan, criticized as forced displacement and termed as ethnic cleansing, involves facilitating the “voluntary emigration” of Palestinians from Gaza through various means. The proposed plan, named “Disengagement 710,” is expected to be unveiled by Israeli National Security Minister and Jewish Power party leader Itamar Ben-Gvir.
Pending U.S. support, Katz emphasized the need to find host countries for the relocated Palestinians, stating that the migration of Palestinians from Gaza is crucial for a lasting solution. Katz expressed Israel’s readiness to assist in the emigration process using sea, air, and other means available.
The proposal comes in the aftermath of the 2023 Hamas-led attacks that resulted in significant casualties on both sides. In response to the escalating violence, former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested taking over Gaza and relocating its residents to transform it into a prosperous region, an idea that was met with international criticism. Subsequently, Trump established the “Board of Peace” to address the conflict, although progress has been limited.
Despite these developments, many Palestinians in Gaza refuse to leave their homes, citing strong ties to their homeland despite the challenging living conditions. The UN has raised concerns about potential ethnic cleansing in Gaza and the West Bank, emphasizing the importance of upholding international law and protecting the rights of Palestinians.
Recent peace plans between Israel and Hamas have avoided calls for displacement, with negotiations focusing on disarmament and territorial withdrawals. However, ongoing tensions and military actions in Gaza continue to impact civilian populations, leading to further humanitarian challenges.
