The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections of a key report from September 1986 commissioned by a federal inquiry on war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill issued a public ruling today, directing the government to reveal redacted parts of the report concerning the resettlement of suspected Nazi war criminals in Canada post-World War II.
B’nai Brith Canada has been advocating for the release of more information from the study conducted by researcher Alti Rodal for several years. In response to a request under the Access to Information Act, Library and Archives Canada disclosed some additional segments of the report in February 2024.
However, the institution still withheld certain details, including sections that address the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding the relocation of Nazi collaborators to Canada. Fothergill dismissed the government’s argument that revealing this extra information would negatively impact Canada’s international relations.
