Andrew Tate, a prominent figure in social media, has been formally charged by Romanian prosecutors for crimes that include trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with minors, and obstructing justice. Additionally, his brother Tristan has been indicted for complicity in the alleged offenses. The two siblings, who are former professional kickboxers holding dual U.S. and British citizenship, were apprehended in Miami towards the end of July following a request for extradition from Britain.
Residing primarily in Romania since 2017, the Tate brothers have been subjects of a criminal inquiry in the country since December 2022, focusing on accusations such as human trafficking. Despite the allegations, the brothers have consistently proclaimed their innocence. According to Romanian authorities, the Tates purportedly lured victims by feigning romantic interest or marriage, subsequently coercing them into creating explicit content for an online webcam venture.
In response to the indictment, a Romanian attorney representing the Tates, Eugen Vidineac, emphasized their intention to meticulously scrutinize the legal aspects and challenge any perceived deficiencies through the appropriate legal channels. The defendants maintain their stance of denying any involvement in the crimes attributed to them.
Currently detained in the U.S., the Tate brothers await a judicial decision regarding their potential extradition to the United Kingdom, where they face allegations of rape. The Romanian anti-organized crime prosecuting unit DIICOT, overseeing the investigation into the Tates, has not confirmed whether extradition from the U.S. will be pursued.
In Romania, the Tates could face trial in absentia, although proceedings are not expected to commence immediately. Per Romanian legislation, the indictment will be forwarded to a preliminary court chamber for review by a judge to ensure procedural adherence.
Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views, previously cited the relaxed law enforcement environment in Romania as a reason for relocating there. The brothers have cultivated a substantial online following, predominantly among young men, by projecting an opulent, hyper-masculine persona centered on fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
