After undergoing renovations since 2024, a Montreal arena in the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough is preparing to reopen under a new name. The Aréna Saint-Louis, situated on Saint-Dominique street in the Mile End area, has been officially rebranded as the Aréna des Patineuses.
During a recent city council meeting, Cathy Wong, the borough mayor for Plateau Mont-Royal, revealed the new name selection, emphasizing its dedication to honoring women athletes, coaches, referees, and volunteers who utilize the venue. Wong highlighted that the arena has evolved into a significant hub for various sports predominantly led by women’s teams, such as figure skating, women’s hockey, ringette, and roller derby.
The arena had been inaccessible to the public since 2024 to undergo extensive modernization efforts, including a complete roof overhaul, the installation of a new refrigeration system, and a redesigned layout featuring improved accessibility with a new ramp.
Local residents in Mile End eagerly anticipate the arena’s reopening, which had been delayed since 2018 due to funding constraints. The Aréna des Patineuses is scheduled to welcome residents back on Sept. 8, offering drop-in hockey and skating opportunities throughout the fall season.
An official inauguration event is planned for Oct. 18, where visitors can explore the facility’s enhancements and even hit the ice with Frigo, the arena’s mascot.
