As summer winds down, Hamilton residents have a variety of options to celebrate the Labour Day long weekend in the city. From the traditional Labour Day parade to the Tiger-Cats’ game, outdoor theater, live music, and street festivals, there is something for everyone.
The Labour Day Parade in Hamilton kicks off at Bay Street North and Stuart Street, making its way to Bayfront Park through York Boulevard and James Street North. Following the parade, a community picnic will take place at Bayfront Park, running from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Tiger-Cats will host the Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Stadium for the annual Labour Day Classic on Monday at 2:30 p.m. The game promises an exciting showdown between East Division rivals, with performances by Tomi Swick and Matthew Good.
For a unique experience, the Royal Botanical Gardens will host the final ANCHORBALL art exhibition during RBG After Dark on Saturday evening. This event will feature illuminated pathways, live entertainment, food, and interactive experiences around 18 pop art sculptures.
Nokomis, an outdoor theater performance at Carter Park, explores themes of reclamation, healing, and solidarity. Written by Danielle Boissoneau and directed by Nada Abusaleh, the play will run from Thursday to Sunday.
Electronic music enthusiasts can enjoy Groundworks 002 — Disco Desert at The Cotton Factory on Saturday. This two-stage outdoor festival will showcase various music genres, live art, and a farm fruit stand, with tickets priced at $39.
Hamilton’s outdoor pools offer a final chance to cool off before closing for the season on Monday, weather permitting. Pools such as Ancaster Lions, Birge, Chedoke, Coronation, Green Acres, Inch Park, Parkdale, Rosedale, Victoria Park, and Walker will remain open.
Additionally, the King William Comes Alive! festival on King William Street aims to promote Hamilton as a vibrant destination for young people. Organized by McMaster student Margaret Qin, the festival features live music, local vendors, craft workshops, and a walking tour, encouraging attendees to explore the city beyond the campus bubble. Visitors can also enjoy discounts and giveaways from participating businesses.
Qin emphasizes community engagement and cleanliness, with a grassroots group, Hammer Street Clean, returning to maintain the street during the festival. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., offering extended hours for visitors to immerse themselves in the festivities and connect with the local community.
