A surprise entrance accompanied by a cloud of smoke sets the stage for the revival of the beloved ’90s cartoon hero, Darkwing Duck. Disney+ has officially given the green light for a brand-new series, marking a return 35 years after the original show premiered.
In this fresh storyline, Darkwing Duck finds himself trapped in an unfamiliar alternate reality where his heroic deeds are unknown. A rebellious teenager named Duckie emerges as the key to reigniting the crime-fighting spirit within this self-absorbed vigilante.
Collaborating closely with Tad Stones, the creator of the original series, the new narrative introduces familiar characters from the franchise, including Drake Mallard, also known as Darkwing Duck, voiced by the renowned Mark Hamill.
The announcement of the reboot on Instagram sparked mixed reactions from fans, particularly regarding the replacement of Jim Cummings, the original voice of Darkwing Duck. While some praised Mark Hamill’s talents, others expressed loyalty to Cummings for defining the character.
Joining the cast, Seth Rogen will voice Darkwing’s scatterbrained ally, Launchpad McQuack, while Lizzy Caplan takes on the role of his adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Additionally, Venezuelan American actor Lilimar Hernandez steps into the new character Duckie.
The original Darkwing Duck series debuted on the Disney Channel in 1991, running for 91 episodes and garnering an Emmy nomination before concluding in syndication around 1997. Notably, the crime-fighting duck made appearances in video games for Nintendo NES and Game Boy.
Point Grey Pictures, Rogen’s production company known for its recent collaboration on a special episode of The Muppet Show for Disney+, will be producing the new Darkwing Duck series. Embracing the iconic catchphrase, the Point Grey team enthusiastically declared, “Disney said, ‘Let’s get dangerous,’ and we said, ‘Hell yeah!'”
