Residents in southwestern Ontario are expressing their concerns regarding a proposed project to expand a walking and cycling trail, facilitating movement between two neighboring communities. The transportation plan, set to be presented to the Municipality of Middlesex Centre council, suggests extending the Ilderton Rail Trail by an additional 5 km to connect with north London. However, this expansion would require crossing through private property owned by several landowners.
A letter signed by nearly 40 local residents addressed to the council highlights the challenges posed by the trail extension. While acknowledging the benefits of the project, the letter emphasizes the disruptive impact on landowners whose investments and privacy are at stake.
The current Ilderton Rail Trail spans 3.4 km between Twelve Mile Road and Ten Mile Road in Ilderton, following the path of former train tracks. The proposed expansion involves repurchasing portions of land from homeowners along the trail route.
Middlesex Centre Ward 1 Coun. Jean Coles, representing Ilderton, has been gathering feedback from residents on the proposal. She notes the mixed sentiments within the community, with concerns raised by those in the agriculture industry, particularly farmers with land along the proposed trail.
Several landowners fear the potential interference with their operations and future land sales. The transportation plan addresses various landowner apprehensions, including issues like trespassing, littering, theft, and vagrancy along the trail, proposing strategies like signage, boundary markings, and collaboration with law enforcement to address these concerns.
The estimated cost of the project is $3.23 million, with a projected completion date of 2038. Coles encourages residents to participate in the council meeting to provide input, underscoring the ongoing flexibility of the proposal to accommodate community feedback and ensure a well-considered approach before any definitive actions are taken.
