Igor Shesterkin from the New York Rangers made NHL history by becoming the 18th goaltender to score a goal. During a 5-1 win over Tampa Bay in New York City, Shesterkin shot the puck into an empty net late in the game. His teammates swarmed him in celebration as he scored with 2:34 remaining. Fans at Madison Square Garden cheered him on with chants of “Igor! Igor!” in excitement over his achievement.
This goal marked Shesterkin’s first in his career and the 21st by a goalie, including playoff games. Shesterkin, now the sole Rangers goalie to accomplish this feat, had attempted to score before. Lightning coach Jon Cooper provided him with the opportunity by pulling Andrei Vasilevskiy for an extra attacker during the third period.
Aside from his scoring prowess, Shesterkin also excelled in goal, making 24 saves out of 25 shots. His performance earned him the first star of the game accolade.
