The Northwest Territories’ top public health official has removed health directives from multiple schools after addressing heightened lead levels in certain water sources. Remediation efforts have been completed at Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ Elementary School, Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ Regional High School, Fort Simpson Student Residences in Fort Simpson, Mackenzie Mountain School in Norman Wells, Echo Dene School in Fort Liard, and Mezi School in Whatı̀. Testing has confirmed that lead levels in these water fixtures now comply with Health Canada standards.
Last autumn, the territory announced plans to assess the drinking water quality in all N.W.T. schools. Subsequent tests revealed elevated lead levels in taps or fountains at over 30 facilities, prompting the removal of affected fixtures until necessary remedial actions were taken. A recent news release stated that ongoing efforts to address remaining fixtures are in progress and will continue as materials are delivered in the upcoming months.
