“Fire at Keating Centre Disrupts Community Hockey Unity”

Mary Farrell, a lifelong resident of Antigonish, N.S., emphasized the significance of hockey games at St. Francis Xavier University’s Keating Centre as a unifying force in the community. Unfortunately, a recent fire at the Keating Centre has disrupted rink services due to damage to the electrical systems essential for ice maintenance.

The Keating Centre, as per the university’s website, boasts two NHL-size arenas utilized for various activities such as hockey games, recreational skating, and practice sessions for sports events. Farrell expressed deep sadness over the impact of the fire on a facility that plays a vital role in bringing together students, families, and diverse community members from Antigonish and neighboring areas.

The fire, which primarily affected the ice plant room, was promptly contained with no further building damage reported. However, the damaged system necessitates replacement, leading to the suspension of rink services. The university acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the situation and assured the community of their commitment to addressing the issue promptly.

In response to the incident, the university’s athletics department is collaborating with ancillary services to relocate scheduled home games to alternative venues in the local region. Home game dates may be subject to change based on ice availability. Despite the setback, Farrell remains optimistic that with community support, the Keating Centre can recover from the fire damage.

The community is rallying together to assist the university and those impacted, emphasizing the importance of the facility’s restoration. The safety of individuals involved is a priority, and the unity of the community is seen as crucial in aiding the recovery process of this significant facility.
