A trial is scheduled to commence today in Brampton, Ontario, for an individual accused in what authorities have described as one of the most significant gold thefts in Canadian history. Parmpal Sidhu faces charges of theft over $5,000 and conspiracy to commit an indictable offense in connection with the 2023 heist at Toronto’s Pearson airport. This trial follows the recent decision by prosecutors to drop charges against two other defendants implicated in the incident. Last month, the Crown dismissed charges against Ali Raza, a jeweler accused of knowingly receiving some of the stolen gold, and Amit Jalota. Meanwhile, a participant who confessed to his involvement in the heist received a four-year prison sentence earlier this year. Arsalan Chaudhary, apprehended upon his return from Dubai, pleaded guilty to theft over $5,000 and was ordered to pay back $22 million in restitution over 40 years.
Peel regional police disclosed that 6,600 gold bars, weighing over 400 kilograms and valued at more than $20 million, were stolen from Pearson on April 17, 2023. The stolen gold and foreign currency, originating from a refinery in Zurich, Switzerland, were transported in the cargo hold of an Air Canada flight to Toronto as part of an operation known as Project 24K. Subsequently, the gold and currency were unloaded and taken to an Air Canada cargo facility at the airport. According to police reports from two years ago, a suspect allegedly presented a fake airway bill to warehouse staff on the same day, leading to the loading of the shipment onto his five-ton truck. Another individual implicated in the case, Archit Grover, is anticipated to stand trial later this autumn.
