“Senior-Crafted Horror Film “The Rug” Unveils Dark Creativity”

In a unique twist, the horror short film “The Rug” explores the idea of solving life’s problems by hiding them under a rug that mysteriously eliminates troublesome individuals. The story centers around Edna, portrayed by Jayne Eastwood, a senior who creatively deals with challenges using this unconventional method. What sets this film apart is that it was entirely crafted by a group of older adults in Aurora, Ontario, under the guidance of Canadian filmmaker Sean Cisterna.

Cisterna, known for his work in the industry, shared that the concept of a horror film involving grandmothers is not the typical association one would make. However, he found inspiration in challenging the creativity of the older adults involved, pushing them out of their comfort zones. What started as a horror film project evolved into a documentary titled “Silver Screamers,” capturing the process and passion of the senior creators.

The decision to delve into the horror genre was not only influenced by its current resurgence in mainstream cinema but also to encourage the participants to explore new genres beyond their preferences like comedy or romance. By embarking on a horror project, Cisterna aimed to broaden their creative horizons and showcase their potential.

For those interested in experiencing the outcome of this unique collaboration, “Silver Screamers” will be screened at the Princess Twin Cinema in Waterloo with free admission and an opportunity for donations. Following the screening, there will be a panel discussion featuring Cisterna, experts from the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, and volunteer Diane Ament.

Dr. Kate Dupuis, an expert in arts and aging, highlighted the significance of creativity in aging populations, emphasizing the positive impact of artistic expression on overall well-being. She commended the documentary for its humor and hoped that viewers would recognize the value of engaging in creative pursuits as a fulfilling and enriching way to spend time.
