Chief Justice Richard Wagner emphasized the critical need to safeguard Canada’s democratic institutions amidst ongoing challenges during the launch of the new judicial year at the Supreme Court of Canada. Wagner highlighted the growing uncertainty globally, driven by increasing polarization, rapid events, and the swift advancement of artificial intelligence.
Comparing democratic institutions to anchors that prevent societal drift in turbulent times, Wagner stressed that their strength is tested during storms, not calm waters, much like the rule of law. The Supreme Court, alongside its members, convened at the temporary new location in the West Memorial Building near Parliament Hill while the main court building undergoes extensive renovations expected to span a decade.
The ceremony also marked the introduction of the court’s newest member, Glenn Joyal, with a formal welcome scheduled for the following month. Justice Minister Sean Fraser addressed the audience, emphasizing the importance of enhancing public trust in the systems that serve their interests to maintain national unity. Fraser underscored the crucial role of the law in distinguishing truth from fiction, especially in the era of artificial intelligence, highlighting the vital role of the court in seeking truth across Canada.
