“Sudbury Voters Prioritize Homelessness and Road Repairs”

Voters in Sudbury are emphasizing the importance of addressing homelessness, promoting financial accountability, and improving road conditions as key issues in the upcoming municipal elections. Mayoral candidates acknowledge that tackling homelessness, especially for individuals needing mental health and drug treatment, requires collaborative efforts with provincial and federal governments.

Respondents to a recent survey expressed the need for more housing options and treatment services to address the growing population at the Energy Court encampment. They highlighted the importance of involving individuals experiencing homelessness in developing solutions and repurposing underutilized spaces for transitional or low-income housing.

Concerns were raised about the delayed establishment of a treatment center at the now-closed St. David School and the lack of support for individuals with mental health and opioid addiction issues. Suggestions were made to expedite small housing projects and improve financial transparency and communication within the municipal government.

Residents also called for better management of taxes and budget allocations, particularly in areas like policing. The condition of roads remains a top concern among voters, with some noting improvements in recent years but others expressing dissatisfaction with the current state of road maintenance.

While the downtown arena has been a contentious issue in previous elections, there is less debate this time. Some residents question the necessity of the arena, preferring alternative developments like the Kingsway Entertainment District. However, construction on the downtown arena is already underway.

Voting day in Sudbury is set for October 26, with online voting commencing on October 16.
