A Quebec coroner will be investigating the suicides of five doctors that occurred since the start of 2026. Chief coroner Reno Bernier announced that coroner Géhane Kamel will lead the investigation, examining the unique circumstances of each case and providing recommendations. By grouping these cases together, Kamel aims to uncover common contributing factors and shed light on the causes and circumstances of these deaths. The incidents occurred in various locations including Val-d’Or, Trois-Rivières, Contrecoeur, Rimouski, and Lévis between March and August of this year.
Kamel, known for presiding over significant public inquests in Quebec, previously led investigations such as the 2020 hospital death of Joyce Echaquan. The decision to initiate this investigation was prompted by a request from a group of doctors in September. Kamel’s past work also includes an extensive inquiry into deaths in long-term care facilities during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.
