“Simpson Street Businesses Unite for Neighborhood Revival”

Ian Cameron emphasizes the importance of collaboration in driving his motivation. He is enthusiastic about witnessing businesses on Simpson Street in Thunder Bay, Ont., uniting to advocate for change within the city’s south side.

Cameron is the owner of Community Spokes, a DIY bicycle repair shop and community center, which is now a member of the recently formed Simpson Street Mainline Business Association.

He expressed, “We’re all in this together, striving for each other’s success and the growth of the neighborhood.” Cameron is currently renovating a new location for his business at 110 Simpson St. Unit A, noting the positive development in the area due to both street renovations and new businesses settling in.

The initiative for the business association is led by Corey Anderson, the managing director of Ingaged Creative Productions, operating The Outset event space at 610 Simpson St. Anderson initiated the association following a series of break-ins at his business earlier this year.

Although not classified as a formal Business Improvement Area (BIA), the association aims to revive the area’s past vibrancy as a bustling shopping district. Anderson reiterated the shared aspiration among businesses to see the neighborhood flourish once more, based on its historical success.

The Simpson Street Rehabilitation Project in Thunder Bay is currently in its third year, involving infrastructure improvements such as replacing underground utilities, resurfacing roads, and repairing streetlights. The final phase will focus on an area known as Charry’s Corner between Simpson and Rowand streets.

Chris Talarico, the proprietor of Carlito’s Board Game Cafe at 301 Simpson St., is expanding his business to accommodate more retail, gameplay, and private events. While Talarico believes the neighborhood is safe, he acknowledges the need to enhance its perception as a secure destination for visitors.

Participation in the business association’s meetings has provided Talarico with valuable insights into the challenges faced by neighboring businesses and non-profits. He emphasizes the importance of diverse voices in addressing neighborhood issues and finding effective solutions.

Talarico pointed out the unique business landscape on Simpson Street, where most establishments are not public-facing but serve as destinations for specific services. He appreciates the platform the business association offers for open dialogue and problem-solving among local businesses.

Looking ahead, Cameron envisions hosting more events in the neighborhood to foster a stronger sense of community. He believes that through events, networking opportunities arise, leading to increased investments. Cameron is committed to staying and contributing to the growth of Simpson Street.
