“Former Homeless Alumna Gives Back at Thanksgiving Dinner”

As attendees entered the Downtown Mission for the annual Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday afternoon, one volunteer had a special connection to the event. Jody Coghill, who was previously homeless and had taken part in the mission’s Phoenix recovery initiative, now gives back as an alumna after completing the program in November. Expressing gratitude for the mission, Coghill mentioned that her time as a client provided insight into the shelter’s operations and the staff’s dedicated work.

The Thanksgiving lunch had already welcomed approximately 190 individuals by mid-afternoon, with more guests arriving as the event continued. Mission executive director Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin disclosed that they anticipated serving between 250 and 300 people, a significant increase compared to their usual daily meals for about 200 individuals. The festive meal, comprising turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, carrots, and dessert, was meticulously prepared by Mission volunteers and kitchen staff.

Unlike the standard meal service where guests collect their food from a window, Thanksgiving diners were seated in the dining area, and volunteers personally delivered their meals. Ponniah-Goulin acknowledged the collaborative effort of local businesses, organizations like Costco, and donations that made the meal possible, estimating the cost per plate to range from $10 to $15, which was substantially offset by contributions.

Beyond providing a nourishing meal, the event aimed to foster community unity. Ponniah-Goulin emphasized the inclusive spirit of Thanksgiving, ensuring everyone in the community felt welcomed. She extended gratitude to the Windsor-Essex community for their continuous support in creating a welcoming environment of “family, friendship, and hope” for those without homes.

When asked about her preferred dish from the Thanksgiving spread, Coghill didn’t hesitate to express her love for mashed potatoes and gravy, emphasizing her appreciation for the delicious meal and the dedicated staff.
