“Yukon Gov’t Expands Cancer Coverage for Wildland Firefighters”

The move by the Yukon government to expand presumptive cancer coverage to wildland firefighters has been met with approval from those within the field. Alex MacPhail, a veteran wildland firefighter and regional protection manager, hailed the decision as a significant advancement for the industry’s working conditions.

In a recent development, the Yukon government introduced a bill to extend presumptive cancer coverage to wildland firefighters, a group previously not included under the territory’s Workers’ Safety and Compensation Act. MacPhail, a long-time advocate for this change, expressed his satisfaction with the progress, emphasizing the potential positive impact on workers.

With wildfire seasons becoming longer and more hazardous, there is a growing concern for the well-being of firefighters and the communities they serve. The proposed amendment brings reassurance that firefighters will receive necessary support in case of illnesses like cancer, according to MacPhail.

Acknowledging the collective efforts of various stakeholders in highlighting this issue, MacPhail welcomed the recent announcement as a victory for all involved. Laura Lang, the minister overseeing the Worker’s Safety and Compensation Board, affirmed that the amendment aims to ensure equal coverage for all wildland firefighters, including government staff and contracted personnel.

Wayne Risby from Yukon First Nations Wildfire expressed optimism about the announcement but reserved celebrations until the bill officially passes in the legislature. He hoped for a timely approval before the holiday season to provide relief and parity in coverage for wildland firefighters compared to their structural firefighting counterparts.
