“Thanksgiving Weekend: Safety Reminder for London Drivers”

Drivers in London and southwestern Ontario are being advised to prioritize safety on the roads during the Thanksgiving weekend as law enforcement intensifies efforts to target risky driving behaviors.

The London Police Service is participating in Operation Impact, a national initiative for traffic safety and public awareness taking place from Friday through Monday. The campaign is aimed at addressing actions that could result in severe and fatal accidents, such as impaired and distracted driving, aggressive driving, speeding, and failure to use seatbelts.

Staff Sgt. Anderson from the London police’s Road Safety Section emphasized the enduring impact of serious collisions on families and communities. Officers will be vigilant over the long weekend, monitoring for hazardous driving habits. The message to drivers is clear: slow down, maintain focus, drive sober, and ensure seatbelt use — choices that could potentially save lives.

Motorists are also reminded to plan their journeys in advance, adhere to speed limits, and ensure that all passengers are securely restrained within the vehicle.

Enforcement efforts remain a key priority, with police data from 2025 revealing over 123,000 Criminal Code traffic violations reported by law enforcement agencies nationwide, including nearly 67,400 instances of alcohol- and drug-related impaired driving offenses. Statistics Canada data linked dangerous driving to 139 fatal accidents and 556 collisions resulting in bodily harm last year.

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is actively engaged in Operation Impact, noting that the Thanksgiving weekend historically records the second-highest number of road fatalities among Ontario’s extended weekends. In the previous year, 13 individuals lost their lives in accidents within OPP jurisdictions during the Thanksgiving weekend period.

OPP highlighted alcohol and drug use as primary contributors to fatalities over the past decade, alongside the failure to utilize safety gear like seatbelts, helmets, and lifejackets. OPP officers are conducting patrols across the province, with a focus on alcohol, drug, and fatigue-related impaired driving, as well as instances of aggressive and distracted driving. Monitoring extends to trails and waterways to address unsafe conduct.

Authorities are urging individuals intending to consume alcohol to secure a safe mode of transportation back home, emphasizing that driving while fatigued can impair one’s ability to operate a vehicle safely.
